ECM Classika PID with Flow Control Overview

The ECM Classika PID had us curious out of the box. After a few quick tests, it had our attention. This high-performance semi-automatic comes equipped with tools we would normally expect of much larger prosumer machines that run for $2000 or more.

Features and Performance

With a custom machined E61 group head, a PID controller, and flow control, you can expect great temperature stability and the option to adjust brew temperature to bring out more subtle flavors in high-altitude coffee, as well as adjust steam temperature to get the steaming power you like. With flow control, you can tailor your espresso to your liking by controlling the flow rate of water through your coffee.

From our tests, flow control really changes the game for your espresso; you’re in complete control of the final product, so this is a plus for coffee connoisseurs looking to experiment with different flow profiles and get different results in the cup. To complete your set of tools is the easily accessed OPV adjustment screw, which can be found beneath the cup tray.

The Classika PID brews with a single 0.75 liter stainless steel boiler, which is an important consideration when it comes to capacity versus needs. the Classika PID is a single-boiler machine, you can pull shot after shot but you can not brew and steam at the same time like you can with a heat exchanger machine.

You'll need to cool and fill the boiler after steaming but it is an easy process and doesn't take long. This makes the Classika PID good for espresso lovers who want perfectly crafted shots at greatly reduced cost and still have room on your counter for a nice grinder.

Why You Should Get It

The ECM Classika PID with Flow Control is one of the smallest espresso machines available with both an E61 group and PID temperature controller. With the added Flow Control Device, you'll have a powerhouse single boiler machine perfect for anyone who likes to experiment with the many variables in espresso preparation to get different flavors in the cup.

  • Single-Boiler/Dual-Use

The Classika PID uses a 0.75 liter stainless steel boiler for both brewing and steaming. Expect warm-up times of about 15 minutes until brew-ready. Steam is ready in just 40 seconds.

  • PID Controller

Control boiler temperature for searching out those elusive coffee flavors. The integrated shot timer compliments this by giving you a live readout of how long you’ve been pulling your shot.

  • E61 Brew Group

The E61 grouphead is constantly heated with water from the thermosyphon system for temperature stability. It also features a pre-infusion cylinder to aid in the extraction process.

  • Flow Control

Flow Control allows you to have greater control over your extraction and get different flavors out of your favorite coffee. By simply having a longer or shorter pre-infusion and controlling the flow rate while the shot pulls, you can tailor your brewing experience to your preference.
