Single dose grinding is the newest way that coffee and espresso enthusiasts are making sure that they’re getting the freshest coffee every day. Eureka has thrown their hat into the ring of single dose grinders with the Eureka Mignon Single Dose, a stylish and compact grinder built to withstand the test of time. I got the chance to test out this grinder, and I was really impressed with the results I got from it.

The Eureka Mignon Single Dose

Eureka’s Mignon Single Dose is a compact grinder that is designed with features for extremely low retention, precise grind adjustment, and noise insulation for quiet operation. With a height of just 13 inches, you can fit this grinder under any regular top cabinet, and with a width of only 5 inches, it’s easy to find a space for it in any espresso setup.

The Single Dose
Eureka Oro Mignon Single Dose Review

Eureka is known for its high-quality, long-lasting coffee grinders. The Italian brand is dedicated to excellence and constantly innovates its products with details like stepless micrometric adjustments, technology to make their grinder quieter, easy maintenance, systems to reduce clumping, and more. Eureka’s Mignon products are the line from their Oro brand, which is specifically aimed at creating a new generation of coffee grinders with all of the latest technology. The Eureka Oro grinders like the Eureka Oro Mignon Single Dose as well as other Eureka Oro Mignon models were designed with superior performance and grinding quality in mind.

As the name suggests, the Mignon Single Dose comes with a 45g hopper that is perfect for holding a single dose of coffee. If you’re grinding an espresso dose, you’ll be using between 7g for a single dose and 22g for a triple dose, but you could also grind enough for a single dose in a pour over or french press. When you single dose, you can store your coffee in a well-sealed container to ensure it stays fresh as long as possible for a perfect cup of coffee every day. This grinder also comes with a dosing cup that fits perfectly with a commercial-standard 58mm portafilter, so you can choose to grind into the dosing cup or directly into the portafilter depending on your preference.

Another key design element that makes the Eureka Oro Mignon Single Dose stand out is the near-zero retention grinding. This means that if you load 16.2g of coffee into the hopper, you will grind out 16.2g of coffee. The hopper’s lid is also angled in a way that will prevent the “popcorning” of coffee beans, so you won’t have to worry about shaking or adjusting the grinder during the grinding process to ensure all of your coffee is getting ground.

The Diamond Inside 65mm burrs will grind at a rate of 2.8g per second for espresso and 3.3g per second for coffee. With a grinding lifespan of 3,000 or more pounds of coffee, they’re made to stand the test of time. If you do the math on the grinding rate compared to the lifespan of the grinder, you can calculate that it will take approximately 135 hours to grind 3,000 pounds of coffee. Realistically as ahome barista, you will probably grind for 15-30 seconds a day, which means that you could use this grinder daily for 44-88 years before it needs to be replaced. The strength of these burrs also makes them great for grinding dense or harder coffees that you can often see in specialty coffee like very light roasts.

Testing the Mignon Single Dose

The Eureka Oro Mignon Single Dose is an absolutely gorgeous espresso grinder. The oak wood accents on the lid and base are beautifully crafted, and the engraved “Single Dose” on the lid and “Eureka” on the base add a distinguishing level of beauty to the already unique design. The 45 degree angle of this grinder is unlike any of the other products that Eureka carries, and it’s not just an aesthetic choice. Though the height of the Mignon Single Dose makes it easy to fit this grinder on your counter under the average cabinet, the angle makes the hopper even easier to access.

The first thing I really wanted to find out about the Eureka Oro Mignon Single Dose was how well the zero retention feature worked, and I was not disappointed by the results. While dialing in for espresso, I measured the same dose in and out down to a tenth of a gram three times in a row, dosing out 16.1g in and out, 16.3g in and out, and 16.0g in and out. Although I believed that the zero retention feature would be good, this blew all of my expectations out of the water.

Eureka Oro comes with an included espresso dosing cup with a rim that makes it fit easily into a 58mm portafilter for spill-free transfer of your grounds. The Mignon Single Dose also comes with a metal cup holder that fits into the oak wood base to hold the dosing cup perfectly in place, so you don’t have to worry about accidentally spilling your grounds by misplacing your cup under the chute. The wood base is removable as well, so if you want to place something besides the dosing cup under the chute, you can get a little bit of extra clearance. And if you do end up spilling any of your grounds, cleanup is a breeze by just removing and wiping down the base.

You can dial in very precisely with the Single Dose using the micrometric adjustment knob. This feature makes it easy to dial in precisely every time and make the small adjustments that may be necessary as your coffee ages or as you change what beans you’re using. I brewed with the Rancilio Silvia Pro X while testing the espresso grind settings, and I was able to dial in to get the right consistency for a perfect shot.

In Summary

Overall, I really enjoyed testing out the Eureka Oro Mignon Single Dose.
